A GST ledger return bridge should explain how the accounting records connect to each relevant return figure. Start with a fixed period and a controlled ledger export, then identify supported adjustments. Do not insert a balancing figure merely because the draft return and ledger total differ.

Compare the same scope

Confirm the company, GST accounting period, source accounts and export date. Identify whether a report shows values including tax, values excluding tax or GST amounts alone. Comparing different measures can create a difference that is not an accounting error.

Keep the original exports and the draft return version being reviewed. If later entries are posted, show how they affect the bridge rather than replacing the starting report without explanation.

Reconcile by transaction category

Separate sales, purchases, imports, credit notes and other relevant adjustments. Review the tax-code mapping and the supporting documents for exceptions. A ledger account called GST may contain items with different return treatment or unresolved entries.

IRAS’s return guidance says the value of input tax should be tracked separately from taxable purchases rather than calculated from the purchase total. The return boxes and ledger categories therefore need a deliberate reconciliation.

Example: a report includes non-claimable items

A purchase report contains costs for which input tax is not claimable. Applying a tax rate to its total will not produce a reliable claim. Ask the accountant to identify the supported claimable amounts and document the exclusions.

Resolve each difference with evidence

Use columns for the source amount, proposed return amount, difference, explanation, supporting document and reviewer. Ask about unusual timing or adjustments before the return is approved. A small difference still needs an explanation; size alone does not establish that a write-off is appropriate.

Retain the approved bridge

Keep the final calculation, approval and filed-return evidence together. Later errors need a separate assessment under the applicable correction rules. Do not overwrite the approved working paper so it appears the discrepancy never existed.
