An invoice charging GST before the supplier's registration takes effect requires prompt review of the effective date and transaction evidence. An application for registration is not the same as an effective registration. Do not assume a printed GST amount is claimable merely because the supplier later becomes registered.

Establish the relevant dates

Keep the complete invoice, supply and payment evidence, supplier identity and registration information. Distinguish the application date, approval notice and effective registration date. Use official information and request clarification through the supplier's established channel.

Refer the transaction for GST review

IRAS says a business starts charging GST from its effective registration date. Ask the accountant to assess the particular transaction and any appropriate document correction. Avoid making a universal tax-point conclusion from the invoice date alone where other transaction facts matter.

Example: a supplier anticipates approval

A supplier adds GST to an invoice while its application is pending. Obtain the actual registration outcome and effective date. Preserve the invoice and correspondence instead of editing the supplier's document internally.

Retain the outcome

Keep corrected documents and the accepted accounting treatment linked to the original. If an input-tax claim has already been made, ask about the relevant correction process separately. A supplier's later registration does not automatically resolve every earlier charge.
