An ECI variance explanation should bridge the estimate filed earlier to the final chargeable income reported for the same year of assessment. Start with the filed ECI and the final tax computation, rather than comparing ECI directly with accounting profit. IRAS may request an explanation where the difference is significant.

Establish the comparison basis
Keep the ECI submission, management accounts used at the time and relevant computation. Identify the company, financial period and year of assessment. A comparison of two different periods can create a misleading variance.
Obtain the final accounts and tax computation with version references. Accounting profit and chargeable income are different figures, so label them clearly throughout the reconciliation.
Build an explained bridge
List adjustments arising after the estimate, such as corrected figures or tax adjustments identified during final preparation. Link each item to supporting evidence and the accountant’s conclusion. Separate an actual change from a transcription error in the working comparison.
Ask the accountant whether any action on the earlier estimate or assessment is appropriate. Do not assume that a variance explanation itself revises a filing or changes a payment obligation.
Example: the final accounts include additional information
The estimate used management accounts before a significant reconciliation was completed. Retain the earlier basis and show how the approved reconciliation affects the final computation. A short explanation with a traceable schedule is more useful than merely stating that the accounts changed.
Keep assessment follow-up distinct
Retain the final submitted return, assessment and related correspondence separately from the internal bridge. Check the actual assessment and current IRAS process for any payment or refund consequence. The reconciliation supports a factual explanation and does not guarantee that IRAS will accept every adjustment.
